샌프란시스코 한인역사박물관 창립 10주년 격려사

 

 

 

 

미국에 크고 작은 역사 박물관, 기념관, 연구소, 보존협회가 2만 1천여개가 있다. 각 커뮤니티  마다 하나씩 있는 셈이다. 샌프란시스코 코리안 아메리칸 역사 박물관도 이중에 하나다. 우리의 역사 박물관의 성장과 발전을 격려하고 뒷받침해야 할 목적과 의미를 되새겨보자. 

 

사람은 빵으로만 사는 것이 아니라 건전한 정신적 생활도 필요하다. 종교, 교육, 애국, 애족 정신을 키우고 보존하는 것은 우리의 얼과 정서 생활에 필요한 것이다. 특히 샌프란시스코는 한인 미주 이민사의 본산지이다. 역사 보존 사업에는 두가지가 절대 필요하다. 관심과 참여 그리고 재정적 뒷받침이다. 

 

빛나는 한인회관 리모델링 각종 페스티벌 문화 행사를 매해 최고의 수준으로 치루는 샌프란시스코 지역이다. 그러면서 한인 박물관을 건립 유지함에는 이리 인색한가! 긴 안목으로 차세대의 정신건강 건전한 정체성을  키우는데 역사 박물관의 역활에 관심을 가지자.

 

요사이 처럼 미 주류 사회의 반 이민, 반 소수민족의 정서가 난무할 때 차세대를 지켜주며 활발이 자기 자리를 지키며 성공하는 젊은이들이 자랑스러운 한인 자손으로 성장하도록 뒷받침 해주자. 그러기 위해서는 역사박물관 같은 문화 사업은 절대적으로 필요하다. 친애하는 교민 여러분, 우리 다같이 밀어주고 동참합시다.

A Word of Encouragement

 

It is estimated that we have over 21,000 historical societies, associations and museums throughout the United States, which means that just about every community, large and small, has some entities devoted to their local historical preservations and studies. San Francisco Korean American Historical Museum (SFKAHM) is one of them, which badly needs the community support to maintain its function and its very existence. Let’s reflect on why we need a historical organization such as SFKAHM. 

 

As the saying goes, we do not live on bread alone. We need spirituality. Religious worship, education, and the development and maintenance of ethnic traditions are examples of our efforts to fulfill our spiritual needs. To Koreans, San Francisco holds an important place. It is the Koreans’ mecca for U.S.-Korean immigration. San Francisco holds the origins of Korean U.S. immigrants and their important events and beginnings.  Uncovering and preserving these historical resources and artifacts for posterity is what SFKAHM is about. For SFKAHM to continue to exist and function, it needs your support, your interest, and your financial support.

 

The San Francisco Korean community has proven its ability to support community projects. An example: the renovation and the AI-upgraded showcasing of the Korean American San Francisco community center in the bustling downtown San Francisco. If we can do this, why can’t we support a museum? We can do it if we resolve ourselves. 

 

Handing down historical legacies to the next generation is critically important given the current anti-immigrant and anti-ethnic minorities sentiment that sweeps the United States. Seeing to it that our children and grandchildren are given a sound footing to succeed and prosper in a hostile environment is our responsibility. Supporting SAFKAHM is one way to do it.

 

I plead that you do it. We all come and go. Before it is too late, let us roll up our sleeves and give to SFKAHM what we can. This will be one way we leave our legacy to our children, who will do their share when it comes to their turn.
